Public commenters, council members discuss newly opened East Akron bar and restaurant that has some neighbors concerned about noise and traffic, others show support for the new business

Margo Sommerville (Akron City Council Ward 3 and Council President) started the meeting at 6:30 pm with all members present The previous meeting minutes passed unanimously

The co-owner of Uncle Mike's said there have been complaints about loud music, fights, and gun shots from the bar. He said security hasn't found that to be happening He said he has worked to fix the parking problem in part by towing illegally parked cars

He said that he is bringing an "urban crowd into a not urban area." He has hired security and been working to fix issues like the parking but doesn't know what to do to meet community needs He asked for help and said he would be meeting with Sharon Connor (Council Ward 10)

A community member and medical student thanked council for their work and support of a partnership with RIP Medical Debt (a national non-profit) He said the program is on schedule and will impact patient care ideastream.org/government-pol…

A community member urged council to take steps to stop the sale of Summa Health to HatCo including withholding City funding or tax exemptions, or rezoning the land that Summa owns to be for non-profit operations only wkyc.com/article/news/h…

A community member said Ward 3 needs economic development specifically in black owned businesses. He said the community has been a victim of racist policies and practices from City Council who hasn't funded new neighborhood businesses

OLD BUSINESS The consent agenda passed unanimously Jeff Fusco (At Large) requested for time on the Planning and Economic Development agenda Brad McKitrick (Ward 7) requested for continued time on the Public Safety agenda

NEW BUSINESS, Budget and Finance Phil Lombardo (Ward 2) requested time on Item 0 He placed items 1 and 2 on the consent agenda

Item 0: Amends the 2024 capitol and operations budget Item 1: Contracts the Law Department with Quality Forensics Engineering LLC for consulting services Item 2: Contracts with Guidehouse Inc to provide 'Post Technical Production Support' for the Workday application

('Post Technical Production Support' is services to assist people in a program or software that is fully developed and completed)

Planning and Economic Development Fusco referred items 3 and 5 Fusco requested items 4, 6, 7, 8, and 9 are placed on the consent agenda

Item 3: Amends city ordinances around enforcement and penalties for Certificates of Occupancy Items 4 and 9: Declares areas in Chapel Hill and Great Streets to be for public purpose and tax free. Property owners will pay a service fee which will go to Akron Public Schools

Item 5: Allows for East Akron Neighborhood Development corporation to refinance debt for Middlebury Plaza and extends Dave's Market's lease Items 6 and 7: Sells parcels of land on Hickory Street to private owners

Item 8: Contracts with Industrial Realty Group LLC to convert vacant property into a wedding venue and event center

Garret thanked the owners or Uncle Mike's and said they have his and council's full support

Sommerville corrected a public commenter said minority owned businesses along Vernon Odom Corridor have received money through Great Streets but said the city must do more She said the black chamber is helping to break down barriers for minority entrepreneurs

She said a restaurant is going into ward 3 with city funding and that they are working with Gregory Harrison to find new businesses to go into his former church in Sherbondy Hill
