Around 67 migrants are currently sleeping in the 19th Police District station, according to council members.
Hi, I’ll be live-tweeting today's 19th Police District Council meeting for #CHIdocumenters @CHIdocumenters, an organization created by the Chicago nonprofit City Bureau to document local government meetings.
06:30 PM Aug 30, 2023 CDT

There’s a total of 22 police district councils (or PDCs) in Chicago, each led by 3 members who are elected every 4 years during the same regular elections that voters appoint their mayor and alderperson.

PDCs meet publicly every month to improve “police oversight, accountability and public safety” by bringing officers and residents together, a city website says. chicago.gov/city/en/depts/…

If you’ve never heard of a PDC before, it’s probably because they’re new. The Chicago City Council voted to create them in July 2021 and the first PDC election took place in Feb. 2023.

Their formation marks years/decades of work from grassroots orgs like the Chicago Alliance Against Racist and Political Repression, The Tribe reported. thetriibe.com/2023/03/ecps-c…

If you live in Uptown, North Center, Roscoe Village or Lakeview, you’re probably in the 19th Police District. It’s west of Lake Michigan, east of the Chicago River, south of Lawrence and north of Fullerton. Its reps. are named Maurilio Garcia, Jenny Schaffer and Sam Schoenburg.

Now, today’s 19th PDC meeting agenda states they’ll cover the “intersection of homelessness and public safety and the Bring Chicago Home proposal,” as well as updates on PDC activity.

The meeting started at 6:35 p.m. on Aug. 30, 2023 in the Athenaeum Center. There’s about 56 people in attendance, including at least 2 uniformed CPD officers.

19th PCD council member Maurilio Garcia (on the far right) kicked off the meeting with a bit more detailed agenda.
