They are presenting a preemptive “strike” to demonstrate how counties feel about municipal bonds. It passes.

The Commission is now recognizing the accomplishments of Cass Technical High School’s Wrestling and Chess teams. The Wrestling team is new and they won the state championship this year. The Cass Tech Chess team is being celebrated now - Ursula Bird, assistant chess coach is thanking the commission for the recognition. The team is 2nd and 3rd place national champions! 1st place state champions! 1st place city champions! Amazing
Addition from earlier- the resolution on tax exemption was 3 under item VII - called: “A resolution by Commissioners Daub and Marecki calling upon all municipalities, the State of Michigan and Congress to take all necessary action to preserve the federal tax-exempt status of municipal bonds.”
Moving to reports from committees - 1st is economic development. There are 4 items. They are moving quickly as these are discussed in committees. The report passes with unanimous yes.
Next report from committee is public services. No discussion. The report passes.
Next is report from Committee on Ways and Means: No discussion on the 4 items. The report passes.
ps- the items are all written in the agenda. But they are moving so quickly through these!
Next - committee on Health and Human Services. No discussion. All votes yes. It’s cool that the votes show on the screen!
Committee on audit. There is one question - when will the follow-up on the report be received. After 30 days, a corrective action will be received and shared is the answer.

Moving on to new business - which includes 4 approval for reappointments to various positions including: the HuronClinton Metropolitan Authority as the Wayne County representative, the Wayne County Art Institute Authority Board of Directors, HealthChoice of Michigan Board of Trustees
There are 10 Testimonial Resolutions and Certificates of Appreciation. A few thank you’s are exchanged. All are passed.
Next item - there are 10 Memoriams. There are a few details exchanged on those who have passed listed here including the cousin of the husband of the chair, and the father of one of the commissioners.

Moving on to public comment - there are no cards in person, no one on zoom, and no one in the chambers.

1 commissioner references the “toxic” land fill which is trying to expand by 5 million cubic yards. Looking to add new hazardous waste process. Also - the license for this dump expired in 2022.
Looks like it’s Tim Killeen speaking - he wants to work with commissioners on this.
This is in Commissioner Allen R. Wilson’s district who says he has been involved extensively in the efforts to prevent these actions from taking place. Says he’s on this like a “blood hound on a cat”.
Commission Chair Alisha Bell says if there needs to be a task force on this, they can consider it.
Bells says Wayne County cannot continue to be a dumping ground for all of North America naming that a lot of it comes from Canada.

The Wayne County Commission and its employees are the legislative branch of county government. The chief role of the commission is to adopt a budget and enact ordinances. The commission also approves contracts, appointments and rules. The money is spent and ordinances are enforced through the administrative branch. The $1.5 billion budget runs the county operations that serve the more than 1.8 million people living in Wayne County.
